Department of Periodontology

Department of Periodontology, School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb was founded 42 years ago. At the meeting of the Faculty Council in 1971 the Council adopted a division of the Department of Oral Diseases into two departments - Department of Oral Diseases and Department of Periodontology. The separation of an autonomous department was initiated by doc.drsc. Jelena Aurer Koželj who was also the first head of the Department of Periodontology.

Periodontology Clinic was established in 1973 as a Clinical department of Periodontology, University Hospital Center Zagreb, at Department of Periodontology School of Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb. This was the first clinical and educational periodontology unit in our country. The first head was prof.dr.sc.  Jelena Aurer Koželj, and since 1998 the Department is headed by prof.dr.sc.Darije Plančak. Since 1974 the Department was included in training of doctors of dental medicine for the triple specialization called Dental and oral pathology with periodontology. Periodontology as an independent specialization is carried out since 1997.

Education at the Department of Periodontology is achieved through two courses in integrated undergraduate and graduate studies - Preclinical Periodontology and Clinical Periodontology. The course at postgraduate doctoral program is “Epidemiological and systemic aspects in the etiology of periodontal disease” (prof.dr.sc. Darije Plančak). Courses at postgraduate specialized studies include: „Standard and advanced techniques in periodontal surgery” (prof.dr.sc.  Darije Plančak), “Immunological and bacterial tests in clinical periodontology” (prof.dr.sc. Marija Ivić-Kardum), and “Periodontal aspects of occlusion” (prof. dr. sc. Andrej Aurer).
