PhD Program in Dental Medicine – Overview

  • The PhD program at the School of Dentistry, University of Zagreb has been offered since 2007/2008.

  • It was launched following an international audit and approval by the National Council for Higher Education and Science.

Program Objectives

  • Develop a scientific mindset and identify key research questions.

  • Train students to plan, conduct and critically evaluate research.

  • Build skills in scientific writing, publishing and presenting results.

  • Translate research findings into innovations that advance the profession and benefit society.

  • Support knowledge transfer to public health, clinical practice, the dental industry and related fields.

Program Structure

  • The curriculum is linked to scientific projects and supported by continuous mentorship from leading experts.

  • Covers areas within Biomedicine and Health Sciences: basic and clinical dental sciences, public health and health care.

Study Components & ECTS

  • Students first acquire core methodological and research skills, followed by specialized coursework.

  • Since 2016/2017, the program emphasizes scientific research:

    • 36 ECTS – coursework

    • 144 ECTS – research activities, conference presentations and publication in peer-reviewed international journals.
