Clinical work

In pre-clinical training courses of restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, endodontics, oral surgery and orthodontics dental students are given lectures on pre-clinical theory and practical exercises. The program is held in a modern preclinical facility equipped with phantom heads, simulating a realistic dental environment with a video screen at each unit allowing each student individual approach to the PC presentations and live video demonstrations. During these courses, not only do the students gain basic manual skills, but also they acquire the basics of minimal and microinvasive dentistry and the most important rules of infection control.

Clinical work begins in the third year of study. In the well-equipped clinical settings of seven Clinical departments (Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Oral Medicine, Periodontology, Oral Surgery, Preventive and Pediatric dentistry and Orthodontics) students learn to apply scientifically based principles of prevention, diagnosis and treatment procedures of oral diseases on real patients, under the supervision of outstanding teachers - clinicians. Often these patients present complex rehabilitation cases that require a multidisciplinary approach, which gives the students an insight into the broad spectrum of dental care. A large number of different patients with diagnoses ranging from mild to severe, as well as those with functional and esthetic problems provide students with the opportunity to develop skills and competences as practitioners with a depth of clinical experiences. The integrated curriculum focuses on outcomes and on preparation for general dental practice.

The School of Dental Medicine with its clinical departments is the only institution in Croatia certified by the Ministry of Health which offers postgraduate specialist education in different branches of dental medicine.
